With the growing awareness of the importance of Big Data, several new professions have emerged in recent years. The Data Scientist and Data Engineer are among the most sought after by companies. For future students, these two jobs can be confusing, both in terms of their missions and training. Follow this complete guide on their differences and discover their respective roles and missions.

In summary

  • The real distinction between Data Scientist and Data Engineer primarily concerns their respective roles.
  • The Data Scientist transforms data into useful information with a focus on Machine Learning.
  • The Data Engineer focuses on creating the data architecture.
  • Differences also reside in the tools used and in the nature of the data handled.
  • The ECE offers training for these two professions, covering various levels of education.

What does the job of a Data Scientist involve?

The fundamental role of the  Data Scientist is to exploit data and transform it into useful information. They rely on Machine Learning practices to detect patterns and build data models. Their training provides them with the analytical skills necessary to interpret and model complex data.

Their tasks range from data collection, through cleaning and modeling, to deploying models.

Beyond their technical skills, this expert must have a deep understanding of the industry and the market. This allows them to translate analyses into strategic recommendations.

The Data Scientist must also have a good understanding of the company and communication skills. This will facilitate the communication of results, the understanding of conclusions, and decision-making.

H2 : What are the tasks of a Data Engineer?

The  Data Engineer is responsible for creating the data architecture. They focus on the design and management of the systems required for storing and processing data at scale. Their tasks include :

  • executing tests
  • developing the system according to needs
  • the organization of data flows
  • the creation of the appropriate data architecture

This expert plays an essential role in the decision-making chain. Their work facilitates the missions of Data Scientists.

What are the main differences between a Data Scientist and a Data Engineer?

Data Engineer and Data Scientist are data experts, with solid foundations in computer science. They may have undergone the same training; however, specialization is necessary. These professions complement each other but have specific characteristics.

The main difference lies in the tools used. The Data Scientist masters languages such as SPSS, Python, R, SAS, and statistical programs. In contrast, the Data Engineer focuses on software like SAP, Oracle, Cassandra, MySQL, Hive, or Sqoop. These allow them to model data and build reliable architectures.

In their missions, they differentiate themselves by the nature of the data. A Data Engineer manages raw data and looks for malfunctions to bring improvements.

On the other hand, the Data Scientist works with previously manipulated data. They explore information to highlight relevant insights.

What are the salaries of a Data Scientist and a Data Engineer?

A  Data scientist earns around 32,400 euros per year at the beginning of their career. With experience, they can achieve a salary of up to 55,000 euros annually, or even more. The salary of a  Data Engineer ranges between 40,000 and 60,000 euros per year.

Their salaries are quite similar. For both Data scientists and Data engineers, earnings vary depending on specialization and industry sector.

What training to follow at ECE to become a Data scientist or Data engineer?

Our engineering school ECE offers various programs in the field of data. The programs cover all levels of study, from bac +3 to bac +5. By joining ECE, you can choose between a bachelor’s, an engineering program, and two MSCs:

  • the Bachelor in Data Developer & Artificial Intelligence: accessible from the 3rd year, this one-year program offers either an initial or alternating schedule. You receive comprehensive training in digital marketing and data analysis science. This bachelor prepares you for a career as a Data scientist;
  • the major in Data & AI: this is a grande école program that introduces you to the professions of Data scientist and Data engineer. The 2-year training is open to students in their 4th year. It covers modules focused on big data processing and analytical applications;
  • the MSc Data Management & Artificial Intelligence : this program enables you to acquire both technical and managerial skills. It trains you to master the collection and analysis of data for strategic decision-making. During the two years of study, you will cover topics on artificial intelligence technologies. This program is dedicated to future Data Scientists, Data Analysts, Chief Data Officers, and Data Managers;
  • the MSc Data Engineer : this is a complete 2-year program encompassing data processing and the development of AI solutions. You will study the implementation of artificial intelligences to meet the needs of businesses. This program prepares you for careers as a Data Engineer, Data Analyst, AI Project Manager, AI Consultant, or AI Developer. The admission level is that of MSc 1st year or MSc 2nd year.
