What is cloud computing for?

The  cloud computing  is a digital revolution that shapes our use of computing resources while simplifying our digital lives. 

It is primarily used to store, access, and process data. It also allows applications to run anytime. To achieve this, it provides computing servers as needed, accessible remotely via the Internet. 

The word “cloud,” which means cloud in French, refers to the shape of the network. It results from the interconnection between devices located in different places. Computing refers to the automation of processes. 

Thanks to this scalable technology, companies no longer need significant physical infrastructure for data storage. This allows them to reduce costs while gaining efficiency and flexibility. 

Individual users also benefit from great convenience. They can access their files and applications from any device connected to the Internet. 

How does cloud computing work?

The cloud computing is based on the principle that a large part of computing takes place remotely. This means on external servers to the device being used, also called Cloud servers. All data generated during this process is stored and processed there. 

These servers relieve local devices from many demands. By hosting software and most information, they will free up memory and processing power of personal computers. Furthermore, they are secure and accessible anywhere as long as an internet connection is available.

However, a Cloud can consist of a limited number of computers. There are public and private Clouds, which can be self-hosted or managed by a provider. To access the servers and hosted data, users must have a web browser or an online account. 

Is cloud computing a future sector?

Yes, the cloud computing is a future sector. To facilitate their digital transformation, more and more companies are migrating their infrastructures to the cloud. This also encourages many technological innovations across various sectors of activity. 

Moreover, the concept of cloud computing offers nearly unlimited scalability. By quickly adapting to fluctuations in demand, cloud computing continues to shape the technological and business landscape.  

What could be the drawbacks of cloud computing?

Despite its many advantages, cloud computing has certain limitations. First, it creates a dependency on cloud service providers. Issues with their operations can lead to service interruptions or data loss for users. 

Additionally, there are concerns regarding the security and privacy of data. Sensitive business information is entrusted to third parties. Connectivity and availability issues can also be constraining in the event of an Internet connection interruption or failure.

How to train in cloud computing at ECE?

To train in cloud computing, ECE offers the program Major in Cloud Engineering & Management, available in the 4th and 5th years. It is part of the engineering program and provides a degree equivalent to a bac +5, which grants the title of engineer.

Another option is the MSc in cloud computing, equivalent to bac +5. It is accessible after completing a bac +3 in a scientific and technical field (computer science).
