In summary:
- Cloud computing offers access to computing resources via the Internet.
- It offers flexibility, savings and scalability.
- Its main service models are IaaS, PaaS and SaaS.
- Professions such as cloud architect and DevOps engineer are in high demand in this field.
- Programs such as the Cloud Engineering & Management Major at ECE prepare students for these careers in just two years.
What is cloud computing?
Cloud computing can be defined as a computing system model that gives you access to shared resources. Thanks to this service, you can access servers, applications and other functionalities via the Internet. It makes data storage and processing easier.
Cloud computing lets you use resources on demand. This saves you the hassle of old-fashioned local servers or other underlying infrastructure for storage. This gives you greater flexibility, especially in terms of performance and accessibility.
In other words, remote servers offered and managed by cloud service providers. They enable customer information to be accumulated, and programs to be run in a scalable and flexible way.
H2: How does cloud computing work in IT?
Cloud computing is based on the provision of services through three main models:
- Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS);
- Platform as a Service (PaaS);
- Software as a Service (SaaS).
These templates let you choose the level of management and control you want over your resources.
IaaS, or Infrastructure as a Service, provides access to hardware resources such as virtual servers and storage.
PaaS, or Platform as a Service, offers a complete development environment. This service includes tools and services to facilitate the creation of applications.
Finally, SaaS or Software as a Service offers you complete, ready-to-use applications via the Internet.
What are the advantages of cloud computing?
Cloud computing offers many advantages for both businesses and individuals. The first is flexibility. Everyone has the opportunity to adjust their resources according to their changing needs.
It’s also a way of cutting costs and making significant savings. It saves companies from spending a lot of money on expensive infrastructure.
What’s more, the scalability of cloud computing means you can move things forward quickly when you need to. This also applies to project development. Thanks to universal access, you can easily consult your data and open your applications anywhere in the world.
Key characteristics of cloud computing
Cloud computing has a number of key features, including on-demand access. It allows you to use it without interruption and according to your needs, without requiring a considerable initial investment.
There’s also the sharing of resources, which encourages collective use, leading to savings and greater efficiency. You can also easily adjust the size of the system to meet fluctuating needs.
What professions are involved in cloud computing?
With the boom in cloud computing, there is a growing demand for qualified professionals in this field. The sectors are very varied. Among the cloud computing professions, the most popular are :
- Cloud architect: the person who draws up and supervises cloud plans;
- DevOps engineer: manages the deployment and maintenance of ;
- Cloud Systems Administrator: the guardian of cloud infrastructures.
In addition to these three key professions, there are many other functions linked to cloud computing. This includes the Cloud Consultant, who is responsible for advising companies on how to implement cloud computing. Then there’s the Cloud Security Specialist, responsible for ensuring the safety and security of cloud systems.
Then there’s the Cloud Network Engineer, responsible for infrastructure design and maintenance. They also include Cloud Software Developer and Cloud Sales Executive.
How to learn about cloud computing at ECE?
If you want to learn about cloud computing, ECE offers the Cloud Engineering & Management Major program. It is open to 4th year students. It is part of the engineering program offered on a sandwich course basis, with a diploma at the end. Its duration is 2 years.
We also offer students the MSc Cloud Computing. To qualify, you need to have at least a baccalaureate +3 in a scientific or technical IT field.
