The main objective of the transportation & mobility major is to train engineers specialized in transportation systems and their development through new opportunities created by digital technologies. Roads, rail, aviation, and maritime transport sectors are highly innovative, each having their own characteristics that need to be studied.

 

The scope of the challenges ahead are very large; projections foresee annual growth rates of around 3.5% for air transport and 2.4% for railways by 2030. Meanwhile, the objectives of the Grenelle Environment Forum set a goal of 60% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. New technologies are emerging to meet these challenges.

Urbanization is at the heart of the topics covered: guided trams, high quality bus services, inter-modalities of different transport systems, and their connection with the means of air transportation. Passenger information, comfort and safety, optimizing energy consumption, rationalization of urban and interurban transport planning, control and traffi- forecasting are all topics for which IT, embedded systems and telecommunications play an increasing role by providing tailored and ergonomi- solutions. These themes are illustrated through large-scale projects such as the greater Paris metropolitan area.

 

Thus the intelligent road concept is becoming a reality, while optimizing freight transport calls for safer and more efficient composite solutions. Embedded systems are the support of assisted navigation, as well as the communication devices that equip all types of vehicles, with the help of increasingly sophisticated software.

The challenges of the technical interoperability of the rail system and ticketing systems such as the Single European Sky through the SESAR project will be studied. New business models and new applications brought on by systems such as Autolib™ or contactless technologies are revolutionizing the world of ticketing. At the junction of embedded systems and information systems, our training combines the skills of both areas and aims to educate engineers to become project managers.

 

Large transport companies, embedded systems designers, car manufacturers and aerospace companies contribute to the curriculum of the major: AIRBUS, ALSTOM, CNES, EADS, PSA, RATP, Renault, SNCF, Thales, VECTOR, and Veolia, among others. While organized exchanges with ECE Paris partner universities allow students to gain an international perspective of the major transportation issues.

 

 

 

Learning Outcomes

Ability to design and implement interconnected transportation systems, as well as their control devices and equipment for users and operators, through the use of embedded technologies and information systems.
