Hackathons are popular events in the world of numerical innovation. They gather developers, designers, makers or marketing profiles in the same place and on a short period of time. They bring together their skills in order to offer a solution to a research question which topic can be brought up by the organizer.

From March 10th to 12th, it is at the ECE Paris engineering school campus that the Merkle Week ended up with a Hackathon on the topic of blockchain applications. Eureka Certification, a partner of the School, was the organizer of the event. Alexandre DAVID, the general contractor of the Hackathon, had called upon international experts to supervise the teams in competition.

This event, open to everybody, has attracted a lot of passionate people interested in innovation and decentralized applications that can be developed based on Bitcoin or Ethereum environments. Among those passionate people, you could find ECE Paris students, mainly from the Connected Things, Networks and Services Major which last year program integrates a practical course on the subject.

During the whole weekend, teams had to think of a new service based on those technologies, prototype it and present it orally in front of all the participants. The final jury chose to reward only two teams who tied for first place. One of the two projects rewarded is VoltaChain.

Its goal?  Achieve peer-to-peer electricity exchange by paying it thanks to Bitcoin. An application that could easily be justified by the development of electric cars and the provision of smart plugs to individuals but that could hardly be imaginable if using traditional non-programmable currencies. The team composition? Mainly ECE Paris students.

As a reward, they received technical books about blockchain and bitcoin, a “bitcoin wallet” and a nice amount of money to share as the first prize was rising up to 7,000 €. Tired but proud, they leave with the acknowledgement of a jury composed by experts and the will to deepen this modern technology and maybe give a new turn to the beginning of their career…

It is a proof, once again, that ECE Paris plays its role in innovation circles, pertinent school programs and the skills of its students.
