2014 International Concours Lépine in Paris : ECE Paris wins third place

ECE Paris Engineering School outdid itself at this year’s Concours Lépine invention competition, winning third place (National Assembly Prize) for the E-Stylus project. The school also won three other awards: The Young Inventors Award for the SMART project, the Ministry of Health Award for the Bee-Bot project and a gold medal for the Smart Smoking project, out of over 500 entries. These results are not only well-deserved recognition for the school’s students, but also for the VPE program (Valorisation des Projets Etudiants, or valorisation of student projects). The VPE, which ECE Paris has been running since 2012, is one of the cornerstones of the innovative pedagogy that makes the school unique, and has earned the IDEFI (Excellence Initiatives in Innovative Education) stamp.

E-Stylus, the work of five ECE Paris students in second-year engineering (Romain Leisner, Manon Commun, Arthur Loisillier, Violaine Margueron and Théophile Micolon), took third place in the prestigious competition. E-Stylus is a diabetes treatment aid that includes an additional module for insulin pens. By digitally monitoring injections and automatically calculating and preparing the correct insulin dose, E-Stylus can make daily life easier for diabetics.

Recognition for the valorisation of student projects (VPE)

The prizes are welcome recognition for ECE Paris’s VPE program (Valorisation des Projets Etudiants, or valorisation of student projects), set up in 2012. These projects are real inventions, designed by engineers of a sufficiently high, professional level to gain visibility and recognition, and to be exploited as concrete, innovative contributions to the scientific, economic and industrial community. “The idea is to involve them in the future development of their patent, to get feedback from the public (professionals and consumers) and, potentially, to find partners for the next stages,” explained David Olivier Bouchez, head of the VPE program.

The Concours Lépine: accelerating innovation

A real springboard for innovation, the Concours Lépine is highly renowned in the fields of renewable energy, medical technology and biotechnology. Founded in 1901 and a leading event at the Foire de Paris, the competition is not only for students; it is open to all inventors and innovators. It has prompted many inventions that have revolutionized the lives of millions of people around the world: contact lenses, the ballpoint pen, the lawnmower, and more.

Other prizes won:

- SMART: Young Inventors Award and Gold Medal

Hydraulic position sensor for use in the automotive industry that undercuts the cost of the current sensor by 20%.

- Bee-Bot: Ministry of Health Award

A medical device that can take a blood sample, perform a serum injection or insert a catheter, all without human intervention – after first having found the best vein or artery on the patient’s limb.

- SmartSmoking: Gold  Medal

Connected electronic cigarette that provides customized help to quit with consumption reports.
