Île-de-France is Europe’s leading region and boasts the second largest concentration —after Tokyo— of headquarters for the world’s 500 largest companies. After Brussels, it is second in the world for hosting the largest number of international organizations such as the OECD, UNESCO and the European Space Agency.

With some 1,700 major events every year, Île-de-France is the world’s leading destination for business meetings and Europe’s leading region for trade fairs and shows.

Recognized skills The region contains a particularly skilled workforce, especially in comparison with other European regions: nearly half of French managers and 78,000 researchers work here. Paris permanently counts an international student population of 100,000.

A dynamic region
The region was the cradle of the industrial revolution in Europe and has maintained a dense network of companies operating in a wide range of areas. Nearly 8 % of jobs in the region are linked to service activities. The industrial sector, however, is experiencing significant growth.

At the forefront of technology
Île-de-France is first in Europe for research and development centers. Five “competitive clusters” were set up in 2005. Among them are CAP DIGITAL and SYSTEMATIC which gather hundreds of high-tech companies in information technology as well as universities and research laboratories. The Île-de-France region holds first place in Europe for density of research and innovation centers in the software, complex systems, health care, automotive, image, multimedia, sustainable development and transportation areas.

A well-connected region located at the crossroads of Europe
Île-de-France contains Europe’s second largest airport network and has a wide range of interconnecting TGV (high-speed train) services. Paris is less than an hour and a half from Brussels and now only an hour and fifteen minutes from London. Connections between airports are made easier by thousands of miles of transport infrastructure.

Re-visioning classroom boundaries

As has always been true, Paris is a million different possibilities for a million different people.

Paris has all but exhausted the superlatives which can reasonably be applied to any city. It’s a wonderful city for aimless wandering. Relaxed quarters such as the vibrant Marais, the elegant St-Germain and the romantic Montmartre are ideal for street-browsing, shopping and café-sitting. The city’s magnificent architecture is enhanced by beautiful formal gardens, by the pathways and pavements that run beside the River Seine and by endless hidden or unexpected havens.

And everywhere you go, historic landmark buildings and contemporary architectural wonders remind you of the city’s pride and grandeur.
