Final Thesis (called the “PFE”)
Materialize your professional project
The final thesis at the ECE Graduate School of Engineering organizes the realization of a technological project during 1 month in the 5th year of the engineering cycle in direct collaboration with a partner company working on a real-world solution development.
Place Yourself in a Professional Context, and Work on Real Projects
Project team
The team gathers at least 5 engineering students (maximum 7) that have skills and competencies in information systems, telecommunications, networks, and embedded systems in line with our 3 technological majors. Teams are assembled based on the skills sets required to successfully lead the project. The project manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and controlling the teamwork. This engineering student serves as an interface between the company and the team.
Project schedule
The project requires 2 months of work from December to January, and has a defined schedule. This represents a total of 240 hours per student.
Project content
If a company wishes to build a new product or system, it can meet with our students who will write out the exact specifications. The project must result in the realization of a prototype version. The project is done in the context of an agreement between the school and the company. Naturally the company owns the copyrights to the product.
A Partnership Between our School and the Company
Company commitment
The company commits to providing all the required hardware and software
components, and the required technological training if such training is
necessary for the successful completion of the project. A lending contract
is signed between the company and our school for the equipment that is put
at the disposal of our students. It includes liability clauses.
The company also commits to mandating one of its collaborators to follow
the progress of the project and coach students. This requires approximately
20 hours.
Our commitment
After validating the letter of intention which describes the project, its milestones and objectives, ECE commits to putting the additional required resources at the disposal of the students. Depending on the cases, it can be a storage area for the equipment, laboratories, and expert faculty in the related domains.
High Technological Added Value
Delivery of a prototype
The realization of the project leads to a full-scale and functional prototype which can be used by the company, or modified thanks to the detailed technical documentation provided by our students. In most cases, the solutions, products, systems, or processes designed and developed by our students are implemented in the partner companies for full usage.
Future collaboration options
After the PFE project, the company has the option to pursue its collaboration with the students:
o with one or more students of the PFE team in the context of a third-year
engineering internship lasting 5 to 6 months from February to mid-September
o with a new PFE team working on a new project starting in October of the
following academic year.
